In 2000 Norwegian invented Freestyle Cruising and changed the industry: eat when you’re hungry, wear what you like, and pick nightly from a dozen-plus restaurants instead of one fixed table. The philosophy runs deep — NCL pioneered solo studio cabins with their own lounge (still the best solo deal at sea), open-seating everything, and entertainment worth staying up for. The newer Prima class brings a three-level go-kart speedway, infinity pools on a quarter-mile ocean boardwalk, and some of the best specialty dining in mainstream cruising. And at the top, The Haven is a ship-within-a-ship enclave with private pool, restaurant, and butlers.

What exactly is Freestyle Cruising?
It means the ship adapts to you: no fixed dining times, no assigned tables, no formal nights. Each evening you choose from a dozen or more venues, walk in (or reserve ahead), and wear resort casual everywhere. It’s cruising for people who don’t like being scheduled.
What is The Haven on NCL?
Norwegian’s ship-within-a-ship. Haven guests get keycard-only suites wrapped around a private courtyard pool, sundeck, bar, and restaurant, with butlers, concierges, and priority everything. It prices like a luxury line — and sails like one — while the rest of the ship’s energy is an elevator ride away.
Is Norwegian good for solo travelers?
The best of the big lines. NCL invented the solo studio cabin — priced for one, no single supplement — and studio guests share a private lounge with nightly meetups, so you can be as social or as solitary as you like.
What is Free at Sea and what does it include?
Free at Sea is Norwegian’s fare bundle, and it is where most of the value sits. Depending on the promotion running when you book, it can bring an unlimited open bar for guests twenty-one and over, specialty dining meals scaled to the length of your cruise, a WiFi allowance per guest, and a shore excursion credit per port. The one thing it does not cover is the daily service charge — that is separate, and we always point it out so the final number holds no surprises.
How does Norwegian's service charge work?
Norwegian applies a daily onboard service charge per guest aged three and over, with a higher rate for The Haven and suite guests than for Club Balcony and below. You can prepay it up to shortly before sailing, and prepaid charges are refundable if you cancel. It is not covered by the standard Free at Sea bundle, though the upgraded Free at Sea Plus does include it. Bar and dining gratuities are charged separately as you spend.
Does NCL have a dress code?
Barely, and that is the point of Freestyle Cruising. There are no assigned dining times and no compulsory formal nights — you eat where and when you like, dressed as you like within reason. Most guests wear resort casual in the evening, and some sailings schedule an optional dress-up night for anyone who enjoys it. If you have been putting off a cruise because you did not want to pack a dinner jacket, this is the line that solves it.
How do specialty restaurants work on Norwegian?
Norwegian carries more specialty restaurants than most lines, each with a per-person cover charge that varies by venue — steakhouse and teppanyaki sit at the top, Italian and barbecue at the gentler end. If your fare includes the Free at Sea specialty dining perk you get a set number of meals, scaled to the length of your sailing. Haven guests eat in the Haven Restaurant at no charge and do not spend a specialty credit doing it. Book the popular venues as soon as your window opens.
What is the Latitudes Rewards programme?
Norwegian’s loyalty scheme, running from Bronze through Silver, Gold, Platinum, Sapphire, Diamond and Ambassador. You earn a point per cruise night, an extra point per night in a suite or The Haven, and more again on qualifying insider offers — so suite guests climb roughly twice as fast.
