The Reef That Made Cozumel Famous
Cousteau declared Cozumel one of the world’s great dive destinations in 1961, and the reef hasn’t gotten the memo that fame fades. Boats run 30–40 minutes down the coast to Palancar’s coral canyons and Columbia’s towering pillars, where visibility routinely tops 80 feet and the gentle drift does the swimming for you. Most tours stop at El Cielo — a waist-deep sandbar scattered with cushion sea stars — for a champagne-toast float before heading home.

Questions We Get Asked
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel Cozumel?
You should be comfortable in open water — these are boat-access sites over 15–40 feet. Flotation vests and noodles are standard and the guides shadow the group. If open water sounds like a lot, a beach-club tour with a roped swim zone over an inshore reef is the friendlier version.
When are conditions best?
Book the morning departure, almost always — lighter wind, glassier surface, better light for photos. Seasonally, December–April brings the calmest seas; summer water is bathtub-warm with the odd fast-moving shower.
Reef rules I should know?
Cozumel’s reefs are a protected marine park: reef-safe sunscreen only, no touching or standing on coral, no gloves. Easiest compliance hack — skip sunscreen entirely and wear a long-sleeve rash guard. Operators supply sanitized gear.
Does my ship dock in Cozumel or tender?
Cozumel docks — it is one of the easiest ports in the Caribbean for this reason. Ships berth at one of three piers on the island’s west side, Punta Langosta, the International pier or Puerta Maya, and which one you get is assigned by the line. Check the pier on your daily programme, because the snorkel boats leave from the marinas, not from your pier.
Is there a marine park fee for snorkelling Palancar and Columbia?
Yes. Palancar and Columbia lie inside the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, and visitors pay a park fee, usually collected by the operator and shown as a wristband. Ask whether it is included when you book so it is not a surprise on the boat, and keep the wristband on for the day.
What sunscreen is allowed on the Cozumel reefs?
Mineral, reef-safe sunscreen only — chemical sunscreens are prohibited within the marine park and operators will ask you to rinse off before you get in. Bring a zinc or titanium-based one from home; do not count on buying it at the pier. Better still, wear a rash vest and use sunscreen only on what it does not cover.
Can I snorkel Palancar from the beach?
No — Palancar and Columbia are offshore reefs reached by boat, and they are drift sites, meaning you go in and let the current carry you along while the boat follows. That is what makes them special and it is also why they need an operator. If you want to walk in from a beach, Cozumel has shore snorkelling elsewhere, but it is a different experience.
What can stop the snorkel trip going ahead?
Wind. When a strong norther blows through in the winter months, the marine park can close and boats stay in — it is a genuine safety call, not an operator being cautious. Sailings are also affected during hurricane season. Book with someone who refunds a weather cancellation rather than offering you a credit you cannot use.
