Norwegian Hawaii Cruises
One ship holds the golden ticket: NCL’s Pride of America sails inter-island from Honolulu year-round — four islands in seven days with overnights, and not a single wasted sea day.
Why Pride of America Stands Alone
U.S. maritime law reserves purely domestic routes for U.S.-flagged ships — and Pride of America is the only large one in the game. The payoff is an itinerary no foreign-flagged competitor can copy: Honolulu departures, overnights in both Maui and Kaua’i, both Big Island coasts, and the Nā Pali Coast sail-by finale — 100% island time, zero repositioning days.
The Pairing, Explained

Overnights Change Everything
The overnight calls are the quiet superpower: Maui's two days allow the Haleakalā sunrise trip (a 3 a.m. start no day-call permits) and a Road to Hāna without watches; Kaua'i's overnight opens Waimea Canyon and helicopter mornings. Day calls cover Hilo's volcanoes and Kona's coffee coast between.
Set expectations like a pro: this is a port-intensive itinerary on a U.S.-crewed ship — think floating island hotel, not resort-at-sea spectacle. The casino's absent (state law), the entertainment's lighter, and none of it matters: Hawaii is the show, and you'll be too gloriously tired to notice.
- Maui overnight — Haleakalā sunrise + Hāna, finally feasible
- Kaua'i overnight — canyon, helicopters, and the Nā Pali finale
- Both Big Island coasts — volcanoes via Hilo, coffee via Kona
- Zero sea days — every morning is an island morning
Four islands, seven days,
and the ship does the packing.
Good-to-Know FAQs
Why is Pride of America the only inter-island Hawaii cruise?
A 19th-century law with 21st-century consequences: purely domestic U.S. itineraries require U.S.-flagged, U.S.-built, U.S.-crewed ships — and Pride of America is the only major liner meeting the bar. Every other line must detour to a foreign port (usually a long Fanning Island or Ensenada leg); NCL alone sails Hawaii pure.
How does this differ from West Coast Hawaii cruises?
It’s the sea-day trade: California round-trips are wonderful, restful crossings — four-plus days of ocean each way around the island time. Pride of America inverts it: fly to Honolulu, then spend all seven nights among the islands. Time-rich relaxers pick the crossing; island maximizers pick this.
When should we book Pride of America?
Earlier than intuition suggests — monopoly economics apply: one ship, all the demand, year-round. Balcony cabins (worth it for the Nā Pali sail-by) and holiday sailings go six to twelve months out. This is a book-first, plan-details-later itinerary.
Do we need to fly in before the cruise?
Yes, and we will always book at least one night in Honolulu beforehand. The flight to Hawaii is long from anywhere on the mainland and considerably longer from the UK, and arriving jet-lagged on the morning of sailing wastes the first day of an itinerary that never stops moving. A night on O’ahu also lets you see Pearl Harbor or Waikiki properly, neither of which fits comfortably into the cruise itself.
Do we need a rental car in the ports?
On some islands it genuinely helps. Pride of America’s calls are long, with overnight stays in places, which gives you enough time to make a hire car worthwhile for reaching Haleakala or the further beaches under your own steam. On other days a ship excursion or a taxi covers what you want to see without the parking. We go through the itinerary port by port and tell you honestly where the car earns its cost and where it sits idle.
Is there a dress code on Pride of America?
Barely, and that fits the destination. Norwegian’s Freestyle approach means no assigned dining times and no compulsory formal nights — resort casual covers almost every evening, and some sailings run an optional dress-up night for anyone who wants one. Given you will spend the week moving between beaches, volcanoes and long port days, pack for warmth, sun and rain showers rather than for the dining room.
What does Free at Sea include on a Hawaii sailing?
Depending on the promotion when you book, it can bring an unlimited open bar, specialty dining meals scaled to the length of your cruise, a WiFi allowance and a shore excursion credit per port. On an inter-island itinerary with a call almost every day, a per-port excursion credit is worth more than on a sea-day-heavy cruise. The daily service charge sits outside the bundle and is billed separately, which we will make clear up front.
Is Pride of America right for a first visit to Hawaii?
It is one of the best ways to do a first visit, because you see several islands without repacking or booking inter-island flights and hotels. The trade-off is pace — this is a busy week with a port nearly every day, not a lounging holiday. Many of our clients add a few nights on Maui or Kaua’i at the end to slow down. If your idea of Hawaii is one beach and a book, a resort stay may serve you better.
