Can I visit The Baths on a Tortola port day?
That’s THE Tortola excursion — a fast boat across Sir Francis Drake Channel, then the boulder maze itself. It’s a national park with real capacity limits on ship days, so we book it the moment your cruise confirms. Water shoes and a waterproof phone case: mandatory.
Is Jost Van Dyke doable with kids?
Very — White Bay’s water is bathtub-calm and the famous bars are cheerfully family-tolerant in daylight (the painkillers come virgin too). The crossing is short, scenic, and half the fun.
What if I stay on Tortola itself?
You’ll still win the day: Cane Garden Bay over the ridge is a legitimate great beach with steel-pan soundtrack, and the drive itself — over Tortola’s spine with both island chains in view — is worth the taxi fare alone.
What currency does Tortola use?
The US dollar — which surprises people, given the British Virgin Islands are a British Overseas Territory. There are no pounds to change and no exchange desk to find; prices are in dollars and cards work at established businesses. It is one of the smoothest ports in the Caribbean for American cruisers, though small notes are still useful for taxis, ferries and beach bars.
Do I need my passport to visit Virgin Gorda or Jost Van Dyke?
Not for immigration purposes — you cleared into the BVI when your ship arrived, so ferries within the territory involve no further checks. Travelling to the US Virgin Islands is a different matter and does require your passport. We would still carry it, or a copy, simply because you are leaving the island your ship is on and it is sensible to have identification with you.
How do the taxis work in Tortola?
Rates are set by BVI regulation rather than negotiated, and they are charged per person each way on a sliding scale — travelling solo costs the most per head, and the price drops as your group grows. Most taxis are shared open-air safari buses rather than saloon cars. Confirm the fare and whether it is per person before you set off, as with anywhere in the region.
What happens if my ferry back from Virgin Gorda is delayed?
That risk sits with you, which is the main argument for booking The Baths through the ship. On an independent ferry your return is your responsibility, and a delay on a tight schedule can mean watching your ship leave. If you do go independently, take an earlier return than feels necessary, confirm the timetable on the day, and keep a generous buffer before all aboard.
Is Road Town worth time if I stay on Tortola?
It is pleasant rather than compelling, and honest advice is that Tortola’s magic is offshore. The pier opens directly into Tortola Pier Park with shops and restaurants, and Road Town itself is walkable from there. If you would rather not board another boat, Cane Garden Bay is the island’s best-known beach and reachable by taxi over the ridge — a lovely, low-effort alternative.
