Which Roatán pier will my ship use?
There are two — Mahogany Bay, which has its own beach and a scenic chairlift, and Coxen Hole in town. Your line determines which; either way West Bay is roughly 20 minutes off, and we tailor the day to the pier you’ll actually use.
Can I snorkel the reef without a boat?
Yes — that’s Roatán’s superpower. At West Bay the coral starts a short swim off the sand, so you get world-class reef with zero boat time. Bring reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard; the coral thanks you.
Are the sloth encounters ethical?
The reputable sanctuaries care for rescued animals under Honduran wildlife rules, with strict time and handling limits the guides enforce. We only book the vetted parks — and we’ll tell you plainly which operations we skip and why.
Which cruise lines use Mahogany Bay and which use Coxen Hole?
Mahogany Bay is Carnival Corporation’s terminal, so Carnival, Princess and Holland America ships berth there. Coxen Hole, also called the Town Center pier or Port of Roatán, takes everyone else — Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, MSC and Virgin Voyages. Both are genuine piers, so you walk off either way. Your itinerary or boarding pass will name the one you are using, and it changes which beach shuttle you want.
Does Roatán tender?
No — both Roatán piers are alongside berths, so you step straight off the ship at either Mahogany Bay or Coxen Hole. Coxen Hole has one pier berth plus anchorage space, so on an unusually busy day a ship could anchor, but the standard experience at both terminals is a walk-off. That makes Roatán a reliable port for a tight schedule, unlike tender calls elsewhere on the Western Caribbean loop.
What currency do I need in Roatán?
US dollars are accepted throughout the tourist areas, so most cruisers never handle the Honduran lempira at all. Beach clubs, dive shops, restaurants and taxis will all take dollars, and cards work at established businesses. Carry small denominations — vendors and drivers often cannot break large notes, and change may come back in lempira, which is worth spending before you reboard.
Is West Bay Beach worth the trip from the pier?
For most people, yes — West Bay is the island’s showpiece beach and the reason the reef snorkel works without a boat. Both terminals run beach shuttles, and water taxis connect West End to West Bay. Mahogany Bay also has its own private beach reached by a chairlift, which suits anyone who would rather not travel. If snorkelling is your priority, West Bay earns the journey.
Do I need an excursion in Roatán?
Not strictly — the beach shuttles and taxis make a DIY day straightforward, and West Bay’s reef is swimmable from shore. Book a tour when you want the things you cannot arrange at the gangway: a dive with a reputable operator, a jungle canopy zipline, or a wildlife sanctuary visit. On a short call, an organised trip also protects you against the island’s slow coast road.
