Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port

Where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, Baja ends in a granite arch the sea carved for its own applause — and from December to April, gray and humpback whales own the front row.

Why Cruisers Love Cabo

The tender drops you in a marina minutes from the icons: water taxis run constantly to El Arco — the arch at continent’s end — and to Lover’s Beach, a strand you can cross on foot from Sea of Cortez calm to Pacific thunder. Jacques Cousteau called this sea ‘the world’s aquarium’; in whale season, the aquarium performs.

The port & its story

The World's Aquarium

Land's End is exactly that — the final granite knuckles of the 1,000-mile Baja peninsula, gnawed by two seas into arches, pinnacles, and a sea-lion colony with zero stage fright. Cousteau's nickname for the Sea of Cortez was earned: upwellings feed everything from mobula ray squadrons (they leap; nobody fully knows why) to the winter migration of thousands of gray and humpback whales.

The town behind the marina grew from sleepy cannery village to marlin-fishing capital to today's margarita-forward playground — but the desert-meets-sea drama never gentrified. Médano Beach faces the arch across the bay, swimmable and social; ten minutes of water taxi puts you beneath the arch itself with pelicans for company.

What everyone comes for

The Excursions Worth Your Day

Everything centers on the water — even the lazy options float.

  • El Arco & Lover's Beach by water taxi — the arch, the sea-lion colony, and a beach touching two seas — Cabo's essential hour
  • Whale watching (Dec–Apr) — grays and humpbacks with calves, sometimes mobula rays flying — world-class and reliable in season
  • Sea of Cortez snorkel — Pelican Rock and Chileno Bay's clear, fish-thick coves
  • Médano Beach day — swim-friendly sand facing the arch, beach clubs at your back
  • Camel ranch & desert loop — the Baja desert's other side, cactus fields down to the surf
Two seas, one arch,
and whales for punctuation.

Cabo San Lucas FAQs

Painlessly — tenders drop you at the marina, and water taxis shuttle to the arch every few minutes. Landing at Lover’s Beach depends on Pacific swell (calm days only), which is one reason the organized arch-plus-snorkel tours are our default recommendation.

Mid-December to mid-April, with January–March the sweet spot — thousands of grays and humpbacks winter here to calve, and peak-season sightings are as close to guaranteed as wildlife gets. If your itinerary lands in season, this outranks everything else in port.

Half of it — the Sea of Cortez face swims beautifully on calm days. Walk 200 feet to the Pacific side (locals call it Divorce Beach, and they’re not joking) and it’s strictly a look-don’t-touch: the undertow there is no metaphor.

Yes — there is no cruise pier at Cabo, so ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers into the marina, a ride of roughly ten to fifteen minutes. It is a scenic approach, but it does mean queuing at both ends of the day and, occasionally, a cancelled call if the sea is too rough. Factor that into anything you book independently.

A shared boat to the Arch has a well-established going rate, but vendors at the marina routinely open at double or triple it, so negotiate and expect to settle well below the first number. Confirm the Arch itself is included rather than just Lover’s Beach, and do not hand over the full fare before you are actually collected. Agreeing the return time up front matters as much as the price.

US dollars are accepted throughout the marina, restaurants and shops, so there is no need to seek out pesos for a single port day. Cards work at established venues. Bring small notes — water taxi captains, beach vendors and tips are all cash transactions, and change from a large bill can be slow to appear or come back in pesos.

It can be. There is no dock — the boat noses into the shore and you step off into breaking surf, handing your bag to a helper as you go. On a calm day it is a small adventure; on a choppy one it is genuinely awkward, and it is not the right choice for anyone unsteady on their feet. Take only what you are happy to get wet.

The call is dropped and the ship stays at sea or moves on, which does happen here from time to time. Ship-booked excursions are refunded automatically in that case, while an independent booking is a matter for you and the operator. It is the strongest practical argument for booking through the ship at any anchorage port, Cabo included.
