Belize Cruise Port
English-speaking, jungle-covered, and edged by 190 miles of barrier reef — Belize is where cruisers float through underworld caves in the morning and fly over a giant blue eye in the afternoon.
Why Cruisers Love Belize
This is the excursion port — the tender ride in tells you the adventure is out there, not at the pier. And what adventure: tubing on a jungle river through caves the Maya called the underworld’s mouth, pyramids where howler monkeys own the canopy, and the largest barrier reef in the hemisphere holding the famous Great Blue Hole.
Xibalbá & the Reef
To the ancient Maya, Belize's caves were portals to Xibalbá — the underworld — and they left offerings deep inside chambers that river tours now drift through by headlamp. Above ground their cities endure: Altun Ha's sun-god temple (on every Belizean banknote) an easy hour away, and Lamanai deeper in, reached by riverboat past crocodiles doing their best log impressions.
Offshore runs the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO wonder stretching 190 miles, studded with hundreds of cayes and the Great Blue Hole — a 400-foot-deep collapsed cavern so perfectly round it looks drawn. Jacques Cousteau declared it one of the world's great dive sites; from a flightseeing plane, it's simply hypnotic.
The Excursions Worth Your Day
Tender logistics mean organized excursions genuinely are the smart play here — book the early ones.
- Cave tubing — drift a headlamp-lit jungle river through sacred limestone caverns — Belize's signature, deservedly
- Altun Ha ruins — climb the Temple of the Masonry Altars, where the jade sun-god head was found
- Lamanai by riverboat — pyramids above the New River lagoon, crocodiles and toucans en route
- Barrier reef snorkel — cayes, coral gardens, and nurse-shark shallows on the hemisphere's greatest reef
- Blue Hole flightseeing — the 1,000-foot-wide sapphire ring from above — the photo of photos
The Maya called it the underworld.
You'll call it the best lazy river ever built.
Belize City FAQs
Why does Belize use tenders instead of a pier?
Blame the reef — the same shallow shelf that makes the snorkeling great keeps ships anchored out, with a 15–20 minute tender ride in. Excursion guests typically board priority tenders, which protects your day; it’s the port where organized bookings earn their keep most.
Is cave tubing hard? Can kids do it?
It’s a float, not a rapid — the river does the work while headlamps paint the cave ceilings. The only effort is a flat jungle walk carrying your tube in. Most tours welcome kids from roughly school age (height minimums apply), and grandparents routinely rate it the trip’s highlight.
Can I see the Great Blue Hole from a cruise?
Yes — but by air. The Hole sits 40-plus miles offshore, beyond day-boat range from a port call, so small planes do the honors. No consolation prize needed: the aerial view is the famous one, and the reef panoramas en route are worth the seat alone.
How long is the tender ride in Belize?
Around 15 to 20 minutes each way, with ships anchored a couple of miles offshore because the shelf is too shallow for them to come alongside. Realistically the tender process adds a good half hour or more to your day once you count queuing at both ends. Build that into any independent plan, and remember excursion guests usually get priority tenders ashore.
What currency is used in Belize?
The Belize dollar, fixed at two to one against the US dollar, which makes the maths refreshingly simple — a price in Belize dollars is just half in US dollars. US currency is accepted almost everywhere cruisers go, so there is no need to exchange. Carry small US notes for guides, drivers and market stalls, and expect change in a mix of both currencies.
Should I book a Belize excursion through the ship?
This is the port where we most often say yes. Everything worth doing in Belize is inland or offshore, the tender adds time at both ends, and a missed connection here is expensive. A ship-booked tour means the ship waits if your group runs late, plus priority tendering ashore. Independent operators can be excellent, but only choose one with a clear written return-to-ship policy.
Is Belize City itself worth exploring on foot?
Not really, and the port is built on that assumption. The Fort Street Tourism Village where tenders land has shops and restaurants behind a secure gate, but beyond it Belize City offers little for a few hours ashore and travellers are routinely advised to stay with organised transport. Belize rewards you for leaving the city entirely — the caves, reef and ruins are the point.
What if the sea is too rough to tender in Belize?
The call gets cancelled, which does happen at anchorage ports. If that occurs, ship-booked excursions are refunded automatically, while independent bookings are between you and the operator — another reason to weigh a ship tour here. Captains make the decision on the morning based on conditions in the anchorage, so there is rarely much warning. Travel insurance will not cover a missed port either.
