Costa Maya Cruise Port

Built where the jungle meets a barrier reef, Costa Maya is the Western Caribbean’s quiet achiever — Maya pyramids without the crowds, a seven-color lagoon, and a beach village that still feels like one.

Why Cruisers Love Costa Maya

Cozumel’s quieter sibling delivers the same turquoise with a fraction of the foot traffic. The port complex opens into Mahahual, a sand-street fishing village with a two-mile beachfront malecón — and inland, real adventures: pyramids wrapped in jungle and a freshwater lagoon striped in seven shades of blue.

The port & its story

Pyramids in the Quiet Jungle

This coast belonged to the Maya for two thousand years — their sacbé roads still thread the jungle to Chacchoben, 'the place of red corn,' where temple pyramids rise out of strangler figs and howler monkeys provide the soundtrack. Unlike the marquee sites farther north, you'll often share the plazas with more birds than people.

Mahahual itself was a sleepy lobster-fishing village until the pier arrived, and it kept its soul: sand streets, palapa bars pouring fresh coconut, and a reef — the same Mesoamerican system that makes Cozumel famous — beginning a swimmable distance offshore.

What everyone comes for

The Excursions Worth Your Day

Choose your speed: profound history, impossible-colored water, or a hammock with a view.

  • Chacchoben Maya ruins — jungle pyramids under howler-monkey canopy, an easy hour from the pier — history with the crowds edited out
  • Bacalar, the Lagoon of Seven Colors — a 26-mile freshwater lagoon striped turquoise-to-indigo over white limestone — sail it, swim it, disbelieve it
  • Mahahual beach clubs — loungers, calm reef-protected water, and coconut in hand along the malecón
  • Reef snorkel — the Mesoamerican barrier reef starts right offshore — turtles and rays without the boat queue

Costa Maya FAQs

Emphatically — it’s one of the Western Caribbean’s most underrated days. Chacchoben gives you real pyramids without conga-line crowds, Bacalar looks Photoshopped in person, and Mahahual’s malecón is right there if a beach chair is all you want.

About an hour’s drive each way — very doable in a normal port call with an organized tour running the clock. The payoff-to-effort ratio is among the best in Mexico.

Everywhere that matters — the port complex and malecón quote in dollars. Carry small bills for palapa bars and beach-chair vendors and you’re set.

The port sits a few miles from the village, so most people take the trolley or a taxi for the short ride down to the beachfront malecón. It is technically walkable, but the pavements are poor and the heat is serious, so we would not recommend it. The port complex itself has shops, a pool area and restaurants if you would rather not leave at all.

Yes, if ruins interest you at all. Chacchoben is under an hour inland by road and sits in genuine jungle, with howler monkeys overhead and far fewer visitors than the big Yucatán sites. The setting is what people remember. Go with an organised tour rather than independently, since the drive is long enough that a missed connection would be a serious problem on a port day.

Lovely, and unusually low-key for a cruise port. The malecón is a car-free sand strip lined with beach clubs, most of which will give you a lounger and umbrella in exchange for spending something on food and drink. The reef sits close to shore, so snorkelling straight off the beach works well. It feels like a fishing village that happens to host ships, which is the appeal.

Not usually — walking the malecón and choosing a club that suits you works perfectly well, and there is rarely a shortage of space. Booking ahead makes sense only if you want a specific well-known club with a pool, or you are a group needing guaranteed loungers together. Otherwise, arrive, look at two or three, and pick the one you like the feel of.

Yes, and it is one of the port’s strengths. The Mesoamerican reef runs close in along this coast, so snorkelling is possible directly from the Mahahual beach as well as by boat, and the water is typically calm and clear. Certified divers have easy access to reef walls a short boat ride out. Gear is available locally, though bringing your own mask is always more comfortable.
